Chat Overleaf
Overleaf AI chat extension with your own model API
AT A GLANCE
Intended use: Overleaf writers who want contextual Q&A and reviewable edits with their own model provider.
Pricing model: Free.
Public-source review: . Documentation checked; product performance was not tested.
LIMITATIONS
- Requires your own model endpoint and API credentials; provider usage may incur charges.
- Selected context is sent to that endpoint; check its handling of unpublished manuscripts.
- No explicit reuse licence was identified in the reviewed repository metadata, README, or package manifest.
- The README recommends Chrome Web Store installation and says ZIP releases have paused updates.
FEATURES
- ▸ Ask about selected text with its source file path.
- ▸ Choose project files as context and see estimated token counts.
- ▸ Preview proposed replacements, accept or reject them, and undo decisions.
- ▸ Configure providers and models, save chat history, and branch conversations.
What it is
Chat Overleaf adds a chat sidebar to the Overleaf editor. Select a passage or choose project files to give the model context, then inspect suggested replacements before applying them. It also supports file references, image input, and saved conversations.
Setup and costs
Install the extension from the developer's Chrome Web Store listing, then configure a model and key. The request implementation sends chat content to your configured OpenAI-compatible API endpoint. Extension access does not include model credits, and remote model processing should not be treated as local-only processing.
Limits to check
Review edits for LaTeX correctness and factual accuracy. Before reusing or redistributing the public source, clarify its licence: the reviewed documentation and package manifest do not specify one. The documented local-development route uses Node.js and pnpm to build the browser extension.
